If you're having withdrawal symptoms now that the Old Vic's fantastic revival of The Norman Conquests has ended, never fear. There's another chance for Londoners to have another hit of Alan Ayckbourn.
His bittersweet 1985 comedy Woman in Mind is transferring to the West End after a sell-out run
at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, Ayckbourn's base. It stars Janie Dee as Susan, a bored, unloved clergyman's wife, who creates a dream world where she has a loving family. But when her two worlds start to overlap, she succumbs to a mental breakdown.
When it first opened last year, critics raved about the way Ayckbourn crams the comic and the serious into almost every moment, puncturing the sinister with laughter, freezing the laughs with a sudden glimpse of grief.
Revived for the first time in 23 years, it's directed by Ayckbourn himself and also stars Joanna David, wife of Edward Fox and mother of Emilia.

But if you can live with all that, let's talk about the good bits: well kept real ale; friendly staff; genuine locals; tourists under sufferance; handily placed in an unsavoury alley running between the Strand and Maiden Lane.
